Helping others is helping oneself

I often hear this phrase, 'Helping others is helping oneself.' I haven't really understood the meaning behind it all along. What happened today enlightened me.

After listening to a teacher's interpretation of the book Liao-Fan’s Four Lessons , I learned that Liao-Fan changed his own destiny by doing good deeds. I was deeply inspired, so I dressed neatly and went out, contemplating that I should do a good deed today. Not far along the way, I saw a woman carrying a few empty boxes intending to give them to a friend. Sensing that she was struggling, I offered to help. Together, we delivered the boxes to her friend's house.

Along the way, she exclaimed how lucky she was. Her prayers to God were heard; God sent someone to help her, and she was very grateful. After hearing these words, I was secretly surprised: it's really a coincidence. She needed help, and I needed to offer help. Everything was arranged so perfectly. Suddenly, I understood that everything we do in this world is for ourselves. There is no giver or receiver. Helping others is helping oneself!
